For Alpha to flourish, we need many volunteers. Please consider volunteering if you have taken part in the Alpha Course before. Your experience of going through Alpha will build on the sense of familiarity that you would already have with Alpha. If you have not been able to attend the course, but would still like to help in some way, please read on to see where you may be able to assist!
Please note: If you have already been contacted by either Molly or Jeff, there is no need to submit a registration form to volunteer. We have you down! Thank you!
Leader (we are looking for 1-3 individuals who would consider this position) Each night of Alpha, there is one person who takes on the role as "leader" or the main facilitator of the night. It is recommended that anyone considering this role would have had the experience of being a "host" during either the pilot run of Alpha or the first wave of Alpha. Anyone considering this role should, as a prerequisite, have gone through the entire Alpha course. The leader would act as the MC for the night and will receive training before the Alpha Course begins. Some materials and content will be provided to help in the facilitation of the night.
Host/Helper (we have a good number of volunteers signed up for this; but if you are interested, please apply!) In each small group, there will be one "host" and one "helper" (defined roles in the Alpha course). The host would be more like a facilitator to the group's discussions that will focus on maintaining an open, friendly environment for conversation. This helper would assist in clearing the group's table after the meal and assisting the "host" assigned to the table. Ideally, the host and the helper would be present for the entire course, but if there are certain weeks that do not work, we can work around that too! The work is nominal but essential and requires the most time commitment of the roles I am listing here.
Hospitality (we could always use help in these areas!) For the following roles, there is no regular time commitment – just whatever you are able to offer. I am asking for those who have a talent in the kitchen for cooking and who would be willing to work with others to volunteer their skills to provide us with at least one of the dinners during the Alpha course. We would probably need 4 or 5 individuals to help in this area each night. We would also need a few folks too who could assist with taking care of the dishes and others for cleaning up. Since there may be parents with children who would like to attend, we are also in need of babysitters who would be willing to volunteer their time to babysit.
Lastly, and certainly not least, we are in need of everyone to pray for this endeavor. Alpha has been used around the world to bring others to Jesus, and it has met great success... but it is primarily because God is able to use this tool for the New Evangelization. As I mentioned before, it's not the complete package that explains everything about the faith – it's a start, a necessary start, in how the message of Jesus is spread to those who are confused about Christianity, who have misconceptions about the faith, who are unsure of what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and even for those who do not believe in the existence of God! If there's someone you know, your neighbor, your co-worker, your friend, a family member who is unsure about the Christian faith, about Jesus, about why suffering is present in the world, about his/her purpose in life, that is who we especially want to join us in Alpha. Bring a guest or two (or three or more!) and help them come to an encounter of Jesus. And pray beginning today for Alpha and those who will take part in it!
